An Unconventional Honeymoon Part 1 | Matterhorn
October 25, 2015
LOCATION: Matterhorn, Valais, Switzerland
He woke me up at 6 am and by 6:30 am we were out of the house. Gary planned the honeymoon... I figured it's all new to me anyway. I don't need to know, just take me there. We drove deep into Valais and after an hour of driving, the road signs gave it away... We were going to Zermatt! I've been wanting to go there since I "googled" Switzerland.
Zermatt lies at the foot of high mountains. It's a car-free town, so we parked in Täsch, took a train to Zermatt station and walked to our hotel with too many bags in hand. The plan was to reach the Hörnlihütte at 3,260 m (10,696 ft). It's the last cabin where climbers sleep before climbing the Matterhorn. We took a gondola and reached the Schwarzee at 2,583 m (8,474 ft).
The mountains alone are impressive, but imagine melodic sounds cascading through the land as you walk along a stony path (the alpenhorn is a long wooden traditional instrument, usually played in the Alps). It wasn't long before I stopped to catch my breath... following a Swiss man up a mountain isn't natural, and the diminishing oxygen doesn't help! Some hours and a million breaks later, we arrived at Hörnlihütte. We found a spot and enjoyed our little picnic alongside a crowd of people who also came to stare at the majestic Matterhorn. There was quite a crowd for a late August afternoon but it didn't take away from the experience.
On another note, this is my first post! I've been meaning to start a blog for a while, I guess moving to Switzerland and being so far from friends and family pushed me to start it. You can read more about me here.
